University of Depression

The University of Depression is your resouce for managing the storm of thoughts that blow through your mind. When depresssion speaks, it does not speak with a soft voice. It shouts discouraging and negative thoughts in your mind. The University of Depression will help you regain command and control over your unruly mind and help push your thoughts in a positive direction.

Psychology of Depression

Depression is a command and control issue. Either you control your mind, or it controls you. If your mind controls you, if it continually bombards you with chaotic racing negative thoughts, then it's time to reestablish command and control. My operational defnition of depression is simple. If you are not in command of your mind and you don't control the thoughts you find there, then you have significant depression.

If you want to learn how to do depression really well, you must master the Laws of Backward Thinking. The First Law of Backward Thinking states, "I am what I feel." The Second Law of Backward Thinking states, "My emotions must be real because they feel so real." The Third Law of Backward Thinking states, "My twisted thoughts and emotions are a fair assessment of who I am and of the world in which I live."

Stop Doing Depression

My mantra for people suffering from depression is:

When you choose your thoughts,
You choose your brain chemistry.
When you change your thoughts,
You change your brain chemistry.
You are not the victim of your chemistry,
You are its creator.

Positive Depression

The war for a positive mind is fought on the battlefield of focus. Until you learn how to control your mental focus, it will be extremely difficult to win the battle for a positive mind. Controlling your mental focus isn't that difficult. The hard part is controlling it persistently and consistently. If you are going to win the battle against depression, you will have to discover the power of positive focus and use every tool at your disposal to develop and maintain a positive mental focus.

Christians and Depression

Christians get depressed just like everyone else. It would be nice if spiritual belief made you immune to mood disorders and clinical depression, but that is not the case. In some instances, depression may be worse in Christians because they think that their depression reflects a lack of faith in God, which makes them feel even more depressed.

Where you are now isn't that important; it's where you are going that counts. Who you are now doesn't matter nearly as much as who you are going to become when the power of God's love rolls through your heart and mind and makes you into a new person with a new way of thinking, feeling and acting.

Depressed Christians

Depressed people spend too much time looking at distorted reflections in the mirrors of their mind. Distorted mirrors can only give distorted reflections, and to expect anything less would be foolish. Depressed people are looking into the wrong mirrors. What they really need to do is to look into the mirror of God's love, a mirror that gives hope.
