TOLERANCE TO NEGATIVE THINKING |

MILD TO MODERATE MOOD DISORDERS
Mood disorders are different from fatigued, overloaded, and
pessimistic states. People with mood disorders have loss
of command and control. They experience mental slippage.
In addition, twisted thinking and distorted emotions make
their appearance.

Everyone feels
down and depressed from time to time. That's to be
expected. You would be abnormal if you didn't feel bad
when bad things happen to you. Feeling bad when bad things
happen is called normal. You don't need pills every time a
negative or depressing thought flies through your mind. If
you popped an antidepressant pill every time a negative thought
reared its ugly head, it wouldn't be long before you were
bankrupt, and the drug companies would be billionaires.

The real problem isn't the negative and
depressing thoughts that rumble through the corridors of your
mind; they are only a symptom of inner malaise. The
critical question is whether you have lost command and control
of your thoughts. Have depressing automatic thoughts taken
over your mind, or are you still in control, and are your
negative thoughts only a minor irritation? A few seconds
of listening to your inner dialogue reveals if twisted thinking
and distorted emotions have assumed control.

Mood disorders vary greatly in their
severity; they can be mild, moderate, or even severe. They
can also be associated with inappropriate euphoria that happens
in bipolar disorders and manic states. Regardless of their
severity, the spectrum of mood disorders share important
characteristics in common. They all have problems with
command and control, and their thoughts become twisted and their
emotions distorted to a significant degree.
The spectrum of mood disorders is broad,
and there are no precise lines separating mild ones from
those that are more severe. And in the end, it really
doesn't matter the name you give to them. What is
important is that you recognize that they are present, and you
treat them. You must reestablish command and control, and
eliminate the twisted thinking that causes the painful distorted
emotions.
CLINICAL DEPRESSION
Clinical depression is different from other mood disorders
because it's so dangerous. People die from clinical
depression - they commit suicide. The loss of command and
control, and the twisted thinking and distorted emotions are so
severe that some people actually want to die. They are
strapped into the electric chair of depression, and they want to
turn on the current in order to finally escape from the
depressing thoughts torturing them.
Treating clinical depression is a job for professionals.
Amateurs shouldn't attempt to treat clinical depression with
self-help books or positive thinking. Clinical depression
is an illness that can result in suicide and other types of
self-destructive behavior. It requires therapy by a
physician specialized in its treatment. Powerful
medications are available that can break the vicious cycle of
destructive thoughts accompanying clinical depression.
People who are clinically depressed
experience the same loss of command and control, and the same
twisted thoughts and distorted emotions found in other mood
disorders, but their severity is exponentially greater. In
addition, patients with clinical depression can be difficult to
treat, and there are pitfalls associated with their treatment.
In particular, patients sometimes put on their bravest face just
before they commit suicide. They appear to be improving,
but what has really happened is they have finally made up their
mind to commit suicide, and their apparent improvement simply
means they know that in a few hours or days their pain will be
over, because they will be dead.
Medications are a two-edged sword.
Certain antidepressants are associated with suicidal ideation in
some young patients. Suddenly stopping antidepressant
therapy may also increase the risk of suicide in severely
depressed individuals.
If you are clinically depressed and have
thoughts about ending your life, you need urgent professional
help. It's ok to read self-help books, and literature on
cognitive therapy, but they are not enough. You need an
experienced professional who can guide you out of the Land of
Depression so you can start enjoying your life again.
DEALING WITH A NEGATIVE STATE OF
MIND
The five negative states of mind are important to recognize.
After you can recognize and understand them, you are able to
deal with them. You won't exaggerate the significance of
the negativity associated with fatigue. Instead you will
do the sensible thing and rest. When you hear the negative
warnings found in the overloaded state, you will adjust your
lifestyle so you don't experience a mental breakdown.
Finally if you suffer from a significant mood disorder or from
clinical depression, you will seek the help of a physician who
can initiate treatment that has a high probability of restoring
a positive state of mind.
A commonsense approach often
makes it easier to deal with a negative state of mind.
When you find yourself in a negative state, stop what you are
doing and remind yourself of nine things.
1. Never trust a tired and overloaded mind.
2. Negative thoughts are your mind's way of saying
stop.
3. Rest is your mind's way of regaining perspective.
4. Sleep cures a tired mind.
5. Adjusting your lifestyle cures an overloaded mind.
6. Never make any major life changing decisions while
in a negative state.
7. If you have habitually negative thoughts not
improved by rest, relaxation, and sleep, you need to consider
getting help from other people.
8. When you have lost command and control of your
thoughts, and when twisted thinking and distorted emotions
become your constant companions, it's time to seek professional
help. You have a mood disorder that needs to be evaluated
and treated by an experienced professional.
9. Suicidal thoughts are a true medical emergency and
cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. Immediate
medical intervention is necessary.
Remember, if you want to have a mind free from depression,
nobody can stop you.
